Skip!

My mother rang me. Her and a friend went out today for a potter around the neighbourhood. Her friend likes to look in skips to see if there is anything worth having. This is a habit my mother finds incomprehensible (and, I suspect, embarrassing). Today they had a quick look in a skip and found about 60 patterns from the 1960s onwards. Just in a skip. Being thrown away.

And the best bit is: she is posting them to me. Hooray!

Have you ever found anything good for free?

  1. Charlotte, I haven't remembered to check your blog for ages and I love that this is the most recent post!!! I do think I'd be a bit alarmed if someone went through my skip! But very cool that they found something so unique...

  3. Wow. That's some find! It's amazing what people will throw out. Unfortunately my best freebie isn't sewing related, we needed a lot of soil to finish off a part of our garden a few years back and my boyfriend's mum saw someone with a sign in their garden saying 'topsoil for free'. So after checking it was right we took about 30 coal bags of soil! Yay! Backbreaking work but free!

  4. @Mimi - similarly my hubbie got a car load of well rotted horse manure for free, you have reminded me! x

@Sarah - I enjoyed seeing your first blog post too x

@Judy - I wondered if a skip would be the same.... it's like a big yellow dumpster that builders put outside your house to put waste in. People hire them when they are having major clearouts or building, you fill it and then it gets taken away. What is that in American???? To potter is to kind of wander about in an aimless fashion I suppose, I am pottering in the house today, in other words I am doing jobs but in a kind of slow and purposeless way, a little here, a little there. I meant my mother and her friend just went for a walk to stretch their legs but they weren't actually trying to get anywhere fast. Does that make sense? x

    1. Thankyou Charlotte, Yep.. we have the same thing.. we have what they call "garbage dumpsters" and It is a big dumpster ..the trucks come and carry them away to a landfill... People will put out some things at the roadside [things they think someone might want ], and if you pass by and want it, you just get it. So basially the same thing. If no one gets it , the garbage men will pick it up with your other garbage.
Pottering around the house..Love it..We say, "not doing much.. just having a lesiure day", which means not doing real heavy work, just poking around with little jobs.. as you said, no hurry..
What would I do with out you teacher!!! I think I will go ask Kenny if he wants to go to the skip? and see what he thinks it is? hahahhaha Love it.

I told him.. He just giggled and said... What do ya'll want with all those ole patterns? teehee

    1. Wow Diane, did you get the water lily at a skip?? Waiting 10 yrs to bloom.. How exciting..Let me tell you ,what I did..
I was working at the hospital as Respiratory therepist. I made the same journey for 25 yrs.. Well, I saw these beautiful white lilies ,year after year.. FInally the home place was torn down, and everything grew up.. And I passed this ole growed up place and those white lilyies were blooming so beautiful.. So.. later in the fall.. I pulled over after work, All I had was a screw driver in the car, but I dug up a root. Brought it home and planted it.. Year after year, it never bloomed..[I just figured God was getting me for "stealing " this flower..lol. Then about 5-6 yrs later , it bloomed.. The most beautiful sight.. and it is still in my yard today.. True story!!!
